Greece property: the week ahead, 12–18 October 2026

This week brings the opening of Greece’s €10,000 relocation grant, the end of storm damage inspections in Crete and the last full week of consultation on a bill that sets up a property value database. Here is what is scheduled and what is still pending.

Dates this week

  • Week of 12 October – Crete storm inspections. Inspections of homes and businesses damaged by the storm of 1 to 4 October should be completed this week, the civil protection minister said on 10 October. Homes get state aid covering 100% of assessed damage. Our report: Crete storm: state aid to cover 100% of damage to homes.
  • Wednesday 14 October – relocation grant opens. Applications open for the grant of up to €10,000 for people who move their permanent home to 11 border and northern regional units, the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family says. Applicants must own or rent a home in the area. Detailed terms should appear on the platform. Background: our report on the grant.
  • Mid-October – Anakainizo documents. On 6 October the same ministry said owners approved under the Anakainizo renovation scheme would start submitting documents within ten days. About 94,000 certificates have been issued. See what buyers of older homes should check.
  • Friday 16 October – ELSTAT national accounts. The statistics agency ELSTAT publishes provisional annual national accounts for 2025.

Consultation still open

The finance ministry’s draft bill on debtors and loan servicers, which also creates a Real Estate Value Bank of actual sale prices and rents, is in public consultation until 10:00 on 22 October. It was announced on 7 October. It is a draft bill, not law. Our explainer: Greece drafts a property value bank.

Still pending

  • 15% transfer tax for non-EU buyers. The rise from 3% is in the draft 2027 budget sent to parliament on 5 October, but it still needs its own law. No bill has been tabled. See our budget report.
  • Heat pump and solar water heater aid. A €200 million programme for 100,000 beneficiaries was announced on 9 October. Rules and dates are not yet published. See our report.

Looking further ahead

  • 20 October: ELSTAT releases August data on arrivals and nights in hotels and short-stay accommodation.
  • 23 October: ELSTAT publishes the construction cost index for new homes (third quarter 2026) and the materials price index for September.
  • 28–29 October: the European Central Bank holds its monetary policy meeting, which matters for floating-rate mortgages.
  • 2 November: the Bank of Greece publishes September interest rates on deposits and loans, including new mortgages.

What it means for buyers

Nothing scheduled this week changes the cost of a purchase signed now. Non-EU buyers should keep following the transfer tax bill, as the start date and any transitional rules will decide the timing of their purchase. Buyers of older homes in northern Greece may find both the relocation grant and renovation aid relevant. Buyers should confirm how any scheme applies to them with a Greek lawyer or accountant.
