Athens Metro Line 4 deadline moves to 2032 as Kypseli works stall

Platform of a modern underground metro station in Athens, Greece

In this guide

The contractual deadline for Athens Metro Line 4 has moved from 20 June 2029 to 3 September 2032, according to reports published on 24 September 2026. One of its two tunnel boring machines has been stopped in Kypseli since May.

The 12.8 km line will run underground from Alsos Veikou to Goudi with 15 stations. The stations are Alsos Veikou, Galatsi, Elikonos, Kypseli, Courthouse, Alexandras, Exarcheia, Akadimia, Kolonaki, Evangelismos, Kaisariani, University Campus, Ilisia, Zografou and Goudi.

Two bottlenecks

The machine “Athena” has completed the Goudi to Evangelismos stretch. The second machine, “Niki”, runs from Alsos Veikou towards Evangelismos and has been halted in Kypseli since May 2026.

Construction group AVAX reported unexpected local ground conditions and ground movements in Kypseli, which damaged 14 buildings. It described the damage as mainly superficial and under technical evaluation. A court expert’s report was submitted to prosecutors on 16 September 2026, Greek media reported.

The second problem is Evangelismos station, where preparatory works have not started. A plan to use 6,545 m² of Rizari Park as a temporary worksite led to a dispute with the City of Athens. The ministry rejected the environmental assessment in May 2026, finding that alternatives had not been explored enough.

The contractor consortium, Avax-Ghella-Alstom, had proposed an extension to 2034, which was not approved. Its executive director, Antonis Mitzalis, said the idle period gives grounds for compensation claims. He added that the company expects to recover much of the lost time once work restarts.

What it means for buyers

Line 4 will serve central districts with large stocks of older apartments, including Kypseli, Exarcheia, Kolonaki, Ilisia and Zografou. The official date for a working station in these areas is now September 2032, not 2029. Once running, the line is expected to remove about 53,000 vehicles a day from the roads, according to the same reports.

What happens next

“Niki” can restart only after revised technical documents submitted by the contractor are approved. No restart date has been announced.
