Prices of materials used to build new homes in Greece rose 5% in August 2026 compared with August 2025, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), in data released on 25 September 2026.
The increase is double the 2.5% recorded a year earlier, for August 2025 against August 2024. On a monthly basis, the index rose 0.4% from July to August 2026, against 0.1% in the same months of 2025.
Diesel was the biggest driver, up 23.2% year on year. Bricks rose 11.1% and copper conduits 10.7%.
| Item | Annual change, August 2026 |
|---|---|
| General materials index | +5.0% |
| Diesel | +23.2% |
| Bricks | +11.1% |
| Copper conduits | +10.7% |
| Ready-mix concrete | +6.5% |
| Aluminium window frames | +4.9% |
| Cement | +4.7% |
The index tracks prices paid by construction firms for 1,490 product varieties, collected from 260 commercial and industrial businesses in major urban centres. It measures materials only, not labour.
Greek media also reported that the Ministry of Development extended a diesel subsidy of 10 cents per litre through September 2026. That only partly offsets the annual rise in diesel prices.
What it means for buyers
Rising materials costs feed into the price of new homes and of renovation work. For off-plan property and renovation projects, contractors’ quotes now reflect materials costs that are higher than a year ago. The index excludes labour, so total building costs may differ.
